<br/>How can you get started in the music of Bach without dying in the attempt

Do you want to know how to start listening to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and not end up lost among its 1,128 works?. Then read this post and you bring into the fascinating world of Bach in a smooth manner so that then gradually go deeper on your own. A lot of people are afraid to face the huge production music greatest composer of all time.

You will have seen that I usually accompany the entries of this blog with music recommendations that try to associate the issue of which I write. I do it because I believe that photography and music are mutually reinforcing and enjoyed it more when combined. In some input you have been enjoying my favorite composer Bach.

Although this blog is for travel and photography I want to dedicate a monograph to Bach who was the composer who served as a link between medieval and renaissance music with the music that has come to these days. His genius was that transformed the music and inspiration for future generations of composers.

When we talk about Bach we usually refer to Joahnn Sebastian Bach, father of 20 children with his two successive wives, four of whom were renowned composers of fame: Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (whose Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had a high opinion), Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach and Johann Christian Bach. He also had a fifth son, Johann Gottfried Bernhard, who abandoned his career and died prematurely at age 24.

Also a composer, played four instruments, highlighting his incredible technique playing the organ of which it is said that the famous Toccata and Fugue born of an improvisation to test all functions of a new organ that wanted to try stressing its sound capabilities.

Bach and the symmetry of the maths

In the last stage of his life Bach was very interested in the musical symmetry, creating a series of riddles or musical problem for students. These riddles or puzzles are mostly present in their canons and fugues, which had to be deciphered in order to be interpreted correctly. Much of the music of Bach has a certain symmetric property, like a stream of geometric relationships, self-similar, it might be described as fractal, mathematical function that produces endless replicas of itself and can be found in nature as DNA helices or snowflakes. At the end of the entry you can view a video explaining to this further

One of his great works of musical symmetry is Musical Offering, BWV 1079, so the registration Quaerendo invenietis ( "Seek and you will find"). In the so-called "crab canon" (posthumous name, because as the crab walk backwards) following a single melodic line is played forward and backward simultaneously. You can listen and view a video, below.

Finally say quePitágoras believed that some music could be used as medicine and as a tool to raise awareness of their students. Bach's music has amazing qualities as Joel Robertson explains in his book Natural Prozac, is able to relax and energize people, even stimulating the natural production of serotonin.

Cómo abordar la música de Bach
How to address the music of Bach

Before you panic at having to choose which one to start for the 1,128 works let's keep going a systematic procedure. Before 1950 you would have lost in the immensity of the work and probably you would have wanted to leave but fortunately in that year of 1950, Wolfgang Schmieder produced the record or catalog of the works of Bach, covering a total of 1,128 works. It is known by the acronym 'BWV' meaning 'Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis "or" Catalog of the works of Bach". It is a numbering system used to identify the works of the German composer, which are grouped into two main sections:

Música vocal / Vocal music
Música instrumental / Instrumental m.
  • 525-771: Obras para órgano / Organ works
  • 772-994: Obras para clavecín / Harpsichord works
  • 995-1000: Obras para laúd / Lute works
  • 1001-1013: Obras para solistas instrumentales / Instrumental Soloits works
  • 1014-1040: Música de cámara / Chamber music
  • 1041-1071: Conciertos / Concerts
  • 1072-1080: Obras de contrapunto (es decir, cánones y otros) / Counterpoint works (ie, canons and other)
  • 1081-1128: Obras encontradas después de 1950./ Works found after 1950

In turn, within each of these two divisions, the works are grouped by genre, and not by date of composition. For this reason, a smaller number BWV does not indicate a chronologically early work.

In this post I include one or more works of each genre for me are the most beautiful and easy to listen to you and hooks you to follow investigating.
